The acting Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Kofi Wampah says it is illegal for landlords to charge their rent in dollars. He has therefore urged the public to report any landlord or individual who demands the payment of rent or any service in dollars. Dr. Wampah raised concerns about the issue on Wednesday at a news conference by the Monetary Policy Committee in Accra. He said the illegal practice is contributing to the dollarization of the economy. �When landlords demand dollars you should refuse to pay, infact they should be reported because Bank of Ghana has to give you permission to receive dollars for payment of goods and services�. Meanwhile, the Rent Control Office says there�s little it can do to discourage the dollarization of rent in Ghana.A National Officer at the Department tells XYZ News that his office is starkly under resourced to check such infringement on the rent laws. Speaking to XYZ News on Dr Wampah�s concerns the National Officer of Rent Control Department, A. S. Dombo said his outfit can only intervene if people report the situation to them. He nonetheless said the Department�s hands are virtually tied over the matter.
