NPP, NDC Lauded For NYEP Success

The Paramount Chief of Esikado Traditional Area in the Western Region, Nana Kobina Nketsia V has singled-out the National Youth Employment Programme(NYEP) as one of the most crucial socio-economic intervention successfully executed by the governments of both the Kufuor-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). Nana Nketsia has therefore commended the two administrations for what he described as bipartisan approach to youth unemployment. Nana Nketsia was addressing the graduation of 515 beneficiaries of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Module under the NYEP at Takoradi in the Western Region. The six-month training is a collaboration between the NYEP and the Rlg Institute of Technology, a subsidiary of Rlg Communications. Beneficiaries are taught introduction to basic computing, software and hardware programmes, entrepreneurship and mobile phone and computer repairs. Beneficiaries are also given set of equipments to facilitate business set-up upon completion of the course. The NYEP initiative was conceived and implemented by the NPP government but was expanded and maintained by the NDC administration with several modules intended to equip young people to be self-sufficient with the overall objective of reducing youth unemployment. Nana Nketsia, a former Board Chairman of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation said the NYEP example shows with little commitment government can put politics aside and do a lot to improve the economy of this country. The Western Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo in a speech read for him said government was doing everything possible to reduce youth unemployment in the western region and commended Rlg for the training offered the youth to make them employable. The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Capt. rtd. Anthony Cudjoe and the deputy national co-ordinator of NYEP, Selassie Atipoe asked graduates to put skills acquired to good use. The head of the Rlg Institute of Technology, Mr Isaac Appiah reiterated the desire of Rlg to collaborate with government to fight the canker of unemployment particularly among the youth.
