All Is Now Clear For Passage Of CI 78 After Today's Sitting Of Parliament

With Parliament rejecting the report of the Subsidiary Legislation on the creation of 45 additional Constituencies, the way is cleared for its Constitutional Instrument to come into effect after today which will be the 21st sitting day of the House on the CI. Member for Builsa North, Timothy Awontiirim said the House has taken the right decision. He said the inaccuracies cited in the committees report could have been avoided if proper consultation had been done. The MP for Old Tafo, Dr Anthony Akoto Osei said the decision of the House was not an end in itself. He said a legal suit is pending which might alter what Parliament had done. MP for Jomoro Samia Nkrumah was of the opinion that a clear mechanism should have been spelt out to allay the fears of those whose electoral areas were not captured that they would not be disenfranchised. Meanwhile, the Deputy Majority Chief Whip, George Kuntu Blankson says, the passage of the CI 78 is a plus for Ghana's democracy. He said the creation of the 45 new constituencies will not benefit the majority or government, but is a step to promoting decentralisation. Speaking to Radio Ghana, Mr. Kuntu Blankson noted that this is an opportunity to take democracy to the doorstep of ordinary Ghanaians. The Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, on his part described the passage of the CI 78 as a tragedy. According to him, the entire nation should bow down in shame following the passage which paves the way for the creation of the 45 new constituencies.
