Sale Of STC Cancelled: SSNIT To Pay Debt

The planned sale of the State Transporter, Inter City of STC, has been cancelled. The assets of STC, were expected to be auctioned to defray a US$3,783,935 debt owed the Prudential Bank in the latest twist to problems that plague the company. Prudential Bank secured an order of the High Court to settle the loan which was contracted to purchase 45 FAW buses. The facility was used as collateral for the loan. The Minister of Roads and Transport, Alhaji Collins Dauda, told Kwami Sefa-Kayi in an interview on Peace FMs morning show Kokrokoo that the auctioning has been cancelled; adding after various negotiations, we decided not to let it go. SSNIT went into negotiations with Prudential Bank and they have settled on how to pay the money and so STC is no longer going to be auctioned. With this, it is possible that STC can become the biggest Transport Company in the country because it has big assets all over. Alhaji Dauda said SSNIT had already made commitment in terms of payment to Prudential Bank as well as a decision to streamline activities in the company to enable it to regain its lost image. He complained about Ghanaian attitude towards government properties. He does not understand why a private hand can make a company which has collapsed come back to life with the same group of people; Ghanaians, but when it comes to government section, the story is different. If individuals can make it work, why cant government assets be handled the same way? Everything of government is mishandled he said. Commenting on the Kumasi Airport which was under renovation after potholes were detected on it, he said the renovation process has been completed and flight can start taking off to Kumasi by close of day. He indicated that notification has been sent to the various airlines to that effect. He also assured that government is doing all it can to ensure that such unfortunate incident does not occur again. Government is doing all it can to undertake major rehabilitation and expansion works in Kumasi and other places like Tamale to enable them accommodate even bigger aircraft he indicated.
