Expert Describes Filing Fees For Presidential, Parliamentary Nominations

A lecturer at the Department of Political Science of the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwesi Jonah, says the filing fee of 10,100 Ghana Cedis for Presidential and 1000 Ghana Cedis for Parliamentary Candidates by the Electoral Commission for this year's election is on the low side. He said every serious politician should be able to raise more than that amount as the money is likely to be refunded should the candidate get above a certain percentage. Dr. Jonah said though he supports the idea that the EC should have given concession to women parliamentary candidates they can still get assistance from civil society groups if they are able to convince them. Meanwhile, a section of the public has expressed mixed feelings about filing fees for presidential and parliamentary candidates announced by the Electoral Commission. When GBCs Radio Ghana hit the streets to interview the public, most of them said the fee for presidential candidates are reasonable but that of parliamentary candidates are too low.
