Nobody Should Attempt To Steal And PersonalizeThe Free SHS Vision Of Our Constitution Drafters

Our vision for education is in our constitution and so our work is cut out for us. As President, you must comply with the constitution and the constitution says within ten years, basic education must be free, compulsory and universal. That is a given so we all must work to achieve thatSenior High School, must be made progressively free and accessible on an equal and equitable balanceand so that is the vision for this country. It is not a single persons vision, nobody should attempt to steal the vision of the constitution drafters. The above quotation is an extract of a subtle response President Mahama heaved during his encounter with the IEA, to deflate the notion that the free SHS policy is a bona fide property of the NPP. President Mahama reiterated that though the policy which has already been enshrined in our constitution is achievable, the nation was currently faced with the problem of "equity of access and quality" at the senior high level. "Free is not just the issue, the issue is about quality", President Mahama noted. He maintained that though it is possible to take away the tuition aspect from secondary level, much work needed to be done to ensure that quality of education rendered to students at that level is warranted. The commander in chief of the Ghana Armed Force emphatically stated that, "free Secondary High School, must be implemented based on a proper road map and not just on the campaign promise of somebody who just wants to get elected as president". President Mahama observed that other African countries have been faced with problems because politicians have used 'whimsical' ideas such as the free SHS to get into power without doing a feasibility study on how to operate it.
