Asantehene Laments: Why Did You Desert Me?

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has expressed disappointment at comments on the airwaves criticising him for losing some crown jewels in Norway. He has also scolded his sub-chiefs for failing to defend him on those comments and others that the theft of his jewels could lead to his destoolment. Otumfuo lamented: Dont I have people to defend me when people are saying all sorts of things on radio about me? If I dont have people to defend me then let me know; If that is the treatment you are giving me then you have to tell me in plain words. The Asantehene cautioned detractors of the Asante Kingdom, stressing that their evil plot against his kingdom will not materialise. He said the Golden Stool continues to provide adequate security and protection for him and therefore nobody can harm him. Addressing a gathering of chiefs of the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo bemoaned how people turn to exaggerate negative issues that occur in his kingdom. The Asantehene who returned from Norway from an official assignment was briefing Asanteman on his missing crown jewels which have received wide media coverage. A visibly furious Otumfuo Osei Tutu chided his sub-chiefs for the lack of unity amongst them, a development he said creates avenue for the enemies of the Asante kingdom to infiltrate their ranks. Where am I taking this [jewelry] to? After all that God and the Golden Stool have done for me? I am being criticised of taking all the property of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo stated. He added: Even if I take all the Asante gold reserves, do I owe anybody an explanation? Asanteman should be careful, we dont have love for one another. Otuo, Mampong, Nsuta you made me king, so if you dont stand by me and defend me; everybody can say whatever they want to say about me here in Ghana.
