Woman Grabbed For Robbery

A trader, Agnes Abena Yeboah, and three others have been arraigned for allegedly robbing a woman of her Golf Saloon car which they used to rob a man of GH�30,000 and four mobile phones and other items. The other accused persons were Mark Konadu Ampofo, driver, Kwasi Amadu alias Nfante driver, and Yaw Amartey Wayo, carpenter. Awudu Mohammed, now deceased, who was the husband of Abena, encouraged her to be part of the suspected gang that shot a taxi driver dead during the operation. They were put before an Accra Circuit Court and charged with conspiracy to commit crime and robbery and they denied any wrongdoing. They have been remanded on the orders of the trial judge, Mr. Francis Obiri and are to re-appear on November 12, 2012. The prosecuting state attorney who presented the facts of the case, Ashong Okai told the court that the complainant, Ekow Ankamah was a farmer residing at Ayamfuri near Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region while all the accused persons lived in Accra with the exception of Amadu, who lived in Cape Coast. According to him, during the early part of December 2010, an accomplice to the robbery called Nana, now at large, visited and solicited the assistance of Ampofo, Amadu and Awudu Mohammed to rob the complainant at Ayamfuri, who he claimed was keeping a large sum of money. Mohammed, who was then the leader of the gang, went to Ayamfuri, surveyed the place and returned to brief his colleagues, after which they planned how they would rob the complainant. The accused person first robbed a woman of her unregistered Golf at Madina, affixed a fake registration number, GR 4879 -09 on the vehicle and set off the same day to Ayamfuri. The attorney noted that the accused persons armed with two machineguns and other implements stormed the house of the complainant and held his wife hostage and at gunpoint, ordered her to show them where her husband�s money was. Furthermore, he noted that the accused persons took the money and seized four assorted mobile phones from the woman before bolting away; adding that all this while the complainant was attending nature�s call. In addition, he stated that when the complainant was returning, he heard an unusual noise from his room and he raised an alarm. Mr. Okai noted that the suspects started firing indiscriminately to scare away all resistance and succeeded in carrying away the booty. A report was lodged with the police by the complainant afterwards. Explaining further, he stated that about five kilometers away from Ayamfuri towards Dunkwa-On-Offin, the accused persons got involved in a motor accident with the Golf car. The state attorney observed that a taxi driver arrived at the scene of the accident but the accused persons, thinking he wanted them arrested, shot and killed the taxi driver after which they abandoned the vehicle and vanished. In addition, he stated that the abandoned vehicle by the police revealed a cash sum of 400 Naira, one locally manufactured pistol, two mobile phones, a talisman, a car number plate with registration No GR.1170-09, one empty shell and an Apex Bank cheque book. He stated that police intelligence led to their arrest they admitted committing the offence during their arrest.
