Accusations by New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) Kennedy Agyapong that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is stockpiling various sophisticated guns in Kumasi ahead of next month�s general elections have resurfaced.
Ghana�s Ambassador to the USA and former NDC Ashanti Regional Chairman, Daniel Ohene Agyekum, has waded into the controversial matter, which attracted national attention some months ago.
Mr. Agyekum is peeved about Mr. Agyapong�s decision to cite his house at Denyame, a serene neighbourgood in Kumasi as a point of reference in the matter.
Mr. Agyapong, MP for Assin North, alleged that the NDC was stockpiling guns in a certain chief�s house at Denyame, which is very close to that of Mr. Ohene Agyekum.
But Mr. Agyekum, who returned to the country from U.S, told Kwadwo Marfo of Kapital Radio that �Mr. Agyapong intentionally used his name in the matter for a purpose.�
He said the Assin North lawmaker accused him in order purposely incite his supporters in the city against him, especially as the elections draw nearer.�
Mr. Agyekum claimed some NPP stalwarts including Hon. Agyepong incited the people of Kumasi against him during the 2008 general elections, a situation which forced some NPP members to attack his house at Denyame.
He claimed during the attack on his house in 2008, a known NDC man was nearly lynched by blood thirsty NPP goons, led by one Appiah Stadium, who has since defected to the NDC.
Mr. Agyekum noted that former President Jerry John Rawlings, the NDC founder, visited the victim at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi in 2008.
The ex-Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman said he had had enough of brutalities by the NPP in the city and asked Mr. Agyapong not to cite his name or house again.
According to him, �Since my arrival, I have realized that there is no iota of truth in the case.�
�The chief who is not feeling well has flatly debunked the report.�
Mr. Agyekum asked the NPP, notably Kennedy Agyepong to refrain from peddling falsehoods about innocent people to inflame passions ahead of the December 7 polls.
He said it was the duty of Ghanaians, irrespective of their political affiliations, to protect the peaceful atmosphere that the populace was enjoying now.
The former NDC Chairman opined that the introduction of the biometric registration would help reduce rigging in the elections, but urged the populace to be vigilant during the elections.
