TWO YOUNG men were on Sunday morning arrested in a Newtown suburb for attempting to snatch a taxi cab in a robbery escapade. The two, Johnny Agbleke, 25 and Ebenezer Kwaku Appiah, 22 both unemployed hired the services of a taxi driver, Kwaku Borsah in charge of a Toyota Corolla cab registered as GS 8951-12 from Lapaz to Newtown. On reaching Newtown, the two asked the driver to continue to Nima, but while approaching Nima, they asked that he took the Panama road that led to Kokomlemle. The driver obliged only to be asked to stop in front of a shop in an obscured location midway through the journey. When he stopped, Ebenezer, who was then seated at the rare of the car, got down and came to stand at the side of the driver while his counterpart Johnny, pulled up a knife on the driver asking him to for his ignition key, phone and money. The two succeeded in collecting an amount of GH�350 and a mobile phone from the driver. They were, however, not able to move the taxi because they could not start it. As they left with their booty, the driver ignited the car and chased them knocking down Johnny and raised the alarm attracting residents to the scene, who chased and apprehended Ebenezer. The two were beaten to pulp, while the driver rushed to the Nima Police Station to report the incident. A petrol team that arrived at the scene rescued them and brought them to the Police Station. However, due to the severity of their condition, they were sent to the Police Hospital were Ebenezer was treated and discharged but Johnny was hospitalized. The Nima Divisional Commander, ACP Timothy Yoosa Bonga who narrated the event to DAILY GUIDE expressed gratitude to the residents who helped in the apprehension of the criminals. He urged other residents to emulate them and be each other�s keeper. He, however, warned taxi drivers to be cautious of the kind of passengers they picked between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. since some riffraff could hide under the cover of darkness to harm them.
