A burly collection of proficient weightlifters are expected to lift the �banners of peace� as they hit the streets on November 20 to demonstrate why it is necessary to maintain the serenity ahead of the forthcoming December 7 elections.
Spotting steel-hard and powerfully curved bodies to match, the weightlifters, spearheaded by the ex-captain of Ghana�s Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Game weightlifting team, Bernard Senyo Fetrie, are embarking on a peace tour across the country.
Accomplished weightlifters who have bought into the �grand� idea are national coach and gold medalist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Majetie Fetrie, South Africa-based Michael Johnson Abotsie who grabbed three medals during the Abuja 2003 All Africa Games, Seth Fetrie, a former world championship representative and Alberta Ampomah who recently took part in the London Olympics, among several others.
The initiative dubbed: �Weightlifting for Peace Tour towards Election 2012� is projected to elicit a lot support from Ghanaians.
Originator of the project, Bernard Fetrie, told the Times Sports yesterday that it was necessary to stage the peace tour as the nation gets set to open another page in its political history.
�As a Ghanaian by birth, I deem it necessary to come down from Australia and tour the country with weightlifters and bodybuilders to educate Ghanaians about the need to maintain peace and order in our dear country,� he stated.
He said contrary to the perception people have about the sport, �weightlifting, bodybuilding or �Macho� is only meant to keep the body fit and not to cause chaos in the country. Body building is not meant for violence or any form of intimidation during elections, therefore, �machomen� who allow themselves to be used by politicians to snatch ballot boxes during the electioneering process must desist from such dastard act.�
He added that participants would have the advantage of being educated �as they would understand a lot of lessons from the tour so that they can desist from such bad acts, especially for the impending elections.�
