MELCOM DISASTER: WATCH U-tv VIDEO Streaming Of Rescue Efforts

77 people have so far been pulled out of the rubble from the collapsed Melcom building at Achimota as a team of Ghanaian rescuers including a detachment from the Field Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Army, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency institutions including the Ghana Police and the National Ambulance Service battle to locate and extract any remaining survivors. The accident which occurred on Wednesday morning has claimed at least nine lives and injured many more. Earlier on Wednesday, the rescue team put the death toll at four but latest reports from PeaceFM's reporters who have been at the scene since Thursday dawn indicate that five more bodies were uncovered from the debris at about 09:40GMT. This puts the total number of deaths at nine. Meanwhile an Israeli plane, equipped with an 18-man team of disaster management experts and doctors, are expected shortly to assist with efforts to rescue the trapped under the rubble building The team will make an initial assessment of the site using special equipment and sniffer dogs that will help identify the locations of possible survivors or corpses.
