Foreigners In Retail Trading Served With Eviction Letters

The Inter Agency Taskforce on foreign retailers this morning embarked on a distress action against foreign retailers engaged in illegal business in the Central Business District of Accra. The foreign retailers were given four months grace period to relocate their business from the market meant for Ghanaian retailers. Two weeks ago, the Ghana Union Trade Organization (GUTA) demonstrated against government for failing to eject the foreigners. K.N. Atuahene, leader of the taskforce told XYZ Business the taskforce are bent on enforcing Ghanas trade laws. He said we are serving them with letters reminding them that the moratorium the grace period which was up to 16th October is over and that we are warning them to leave the place. According to Mr. Atuahene, their rounds have shown that there are still non-Ghanaians engaged in retail trade and the letters are to inform them to desist. Mr. Atuahene said the exercise is being replicated in all regional capitals. Meanwhile, XYZ BUSINESS understands the foreign retailers have closed their shops and bolted.
