The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has stated that contrary to media reports vegetables from the Ashanti Region are safe for consumption. According to the Authority, there is no cause for alarm since the FDA is doing its work to ensure the safety of consumers. This statement follows a recent survey report which indicated that health authorities could soon be grappling with a grave public health concern as vegetables sold in Accra markets have been found to contain up to 5000 times the permissible levels of chemical residue. The Director of the Northern Sector of the Food and Drugs Authority, Nora Tei-Larbi gave the assurance that there was nothing to be afraid of. She urged farmers to avoid bad farming practices such as spraying vegetables a few days to harvesting and mixing different chemicals for the spraying of vegetables. Madam Tei-Larbi called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural extension officers in the country to intensify education on the use of chemicals for vegetable treatment to empower farmers to do the right thing.
