Be Proactive In Calming Nerves After Elections - Rawlings

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has urged the clergy and civil society to be proactive in calming nerves after Fridays elections. According to the former President, the same pro-active active attitude exhibited ahead of the elections must be exhibited after the elections because losers in the election might not take it lightly. Im hoping that when its over, the clergy will be very quick to share with us the integrity that would have been observed as well as their thoughts and approval because there are others who will be really peeved to have lost and would want to resort to uncharitable means of redressing issues, he stated. Mr. Rawlings speaking to an election observer team, Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa, EISA, also decried the inability of state institutions to live up to their expectations at a time when the citizenry need them both. When some of the institutions expected to protect freedom and justice as well as judgement of issues do not live up to expectations of the people, the people end up looking forward to a correction of the past misdeeds through an electoral process so if we cannot have justice from our judiciary or government, the only way we can have it is to vote them out, he said. The leader of the EISA Election Observer Mission to Ghana, Ahmed Isaaka Salam who is also the chairman of Kenyas Electoral Commission said the introduction of BVR and the call book is a new innovation in Ghana. Machines can fail you sometimes so we need to be careful on how we look at the electoral process and I hope that the commission has put together backups and safeguards to prevent this, he said.
