Call To Abolish Payment Of Dowry

Panelists on GTV's Current Affairs Programme Talking Point have stressed the need to abolish the payment of dowry. They maintain that the practice gives men the impression that they have absolute control over their wives and hence maltreat them. A Gender Activist Nana Oye Lithur attributed the phenomenon to ineffective enforcement of the law. Commenting on the same topic, the Acting Head of the Domestic Violence and Victim's Support Unit at the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs, Christiana Boateng Ankomah believes abolishing the dowry system will create a level playing field for males and females. The Deputy Coordinator of DOVSU, Greater Accra Region Superintendent Bismark Agyapong who gave statistics of reported cases of domestic abuse called for more education by stakeholders to ensure that gender based violence is reduced.
