Mfantsipim School Wins 2013 Sprite Ball Championship

Mfantsipim School won an unparalleled third consecutive Sprite Ball Championship trophy after defeating Koforidua Secondary Technical School (K.S.T.S) 46-36 in front of a packed crowd at the Aviation Social Centre last Saturday night in Accra. The event sponsored by Coca Cola with its brand trade mark Sprite and supported by Indomie Noodles saw over 24 senior high schools from six regions (regional champions) competing for the ultimate cash prize, trophy and products from sponsors. The Sprite Ball Championship, 7th in the series is the most prestigious High Schools basketball championship in Ghana. In a highly charged atmosphere amidst drumming and dancing, singing and name calling Mfantsipim school took the ball to their opponents K.S.T.S in the early minutes of the game. The game plan of the Cape Coast-based side worked to perfection with a sweet and attacking flair of basketball artistry that excited the over four thousand fans at the venue. Mfantsipim took an early lead in the first quarter before their opponent clawed their way back into the game to draw level in the second quarter. It looked as if the game plan of catching Mfantsipim on the break didnt work out as the Moba boys kept cool heads to take a commanding lead in the third quarter and when it got to the fourth quarter, it was obvious the players of KSTS had lost their vim and power-play. Julian Morgan put the icing on the cake with sublime back pass that saw Maxwell Okoampah soaring above their counterparts from K.S.T.S to deliver the title. The third spot was picked by Ghana Secondary Technical School (G.S.T.S) from the Western region of Ghana. Meanwhile, in the girls competition Aggrey Memorial Zion Senior High School lifted the trophy for the first time after failing to win in 2009 and 2010. They beat St Marys to be crown champions. Yaa Asantewaa Senior high school (defending champions) came third. Young enterprising centre forward, David Akuffo, (Mfantsipim) and Matilda Gordon (Aggrey Memorial) were voted the MVP in the boys and girls category respectively for their individual brilliance in the two-day event. For their prize they both received a brand new laptop courtesy title sponsor Coca Cola with its brand trade mark SPRITE plus a certificate of recognition. The 2013 Sprite Ball Championship was organized by Rite Multimedia, an event management company in Ghana.
