New Dump Sites For Accra

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has revealed that the Accra Compost and Recycling plant at Adjen Kotoku as well as the Tema Engineered landfill site will serve as alternatives for disposal of refuse in the capital. This according to the Ministry has become necessary following the closure of the Achimota Landfill site to waste management companies. The landfill site for several months had been a major concern to residents who complained bitterly of the distasteful stench emanating from the site. The Acting Director of Environmental Sanitation at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural development, Demedeme Naa who disclosed this at a press briefing in Accra said government will also adopt a long term measure to handle waste in the capital. The medium to a long term measure, we expect that we put in place the required infrastructure. The challenge with Adjen Kotoku is the distance, because of the traffic and other things, within the Accra Metropolis, people are unwilling to move to that place because of the cost of transporting. He however added that his outfit is planning to put in place transfer stations all over the capital and this will be started in the first quarter of this year to break the distance to the compost and recycling plants.
