The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described as �reckless and violent rhetoric�, which seeks to destabilize the country, comments allegedly made by �caretaker� deputy Minister of Interior, Mr. Kobby Acheampong, to the effect that, President John Mahama could decree a curfew and have the leadership of the opposition party arbitrarily arrested. The opposition party, in a statement signed by one of its Deputy Directors of Communication, Yaw Buaben Asamoah, pointed out that "the President is NOT a dictator who rules by decree and cannot arrest citizens arbitrarily". The party again warned "No amount of intimidation or threats to impose an illegal curfew, arrest the NPP leadership arbitrarily or crush peaceful demonstrations will stop the resolve of the people of Ghana to reverse the grievous scandal of an election that appears to have corrupted the true will of the citizens of Ghana." Read the full statement below: MAHAMA GOVERNMENT THREATENS NPP LEADERS The NPP condemns in the strongest possible terms comments made on Metro TV�s � Good Morning Ghana programme, on Monday 14/1/2013 by Kobby Acheampong, �caretaker� deputy Minister of Interior. This reckless and violent rhetoric by a member of the Mahama government seeks to destabilize the country by threatening that the President could decree a curfew and the leadership of the NPP arbitrarily arrested. Ghana is under the rule of law. The President is NOT a dictator who rules by decree and cannot arrest citizens arbitrarily. The people have a right to protection from the state as they express themselves through speech or in demonstrations. No amount of intimidation or threats to impose an illegal curfew, arrest the NPP leadership arbitrarily or crush peaceful demonstrations will stop the resolve of the people of Ghana to reverse the grievous scandal of an election that appears to have corrupted the true will of the citizens of Ghana in the 2012 Presidential election. In reaction to these vitriolic assertions and threats of arrest of NPP leaders, the NPP wants to reiterate that Ghana is under the rule of law and every government is subject to law and duty bound to protect its citizens.
