Chiefs Must Stop The Ancient Custom Of Not Meeting Persons With Disability - Group

The Ghana Federation of the Disabled is asking the National House of Chiefs to immediately abolish cultural practices that bar chiefs from dealing with physically challenged persons. It follows the nomination of Dr. Henry Seidu Daannaa as Minister designate for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs. Although the Federation has welcomed the appointment of the visually impaired lawyer, it fears some practices will usurp his powers and frustrate his work. President of the Federation, Yaw Ofori Debrah says the House of Chiefs must immediately wage a campaign to end what it says are obnoxious cultural practices against physically challenged persons. I wonder how they are going to work with a person with visual disability because he has to visit the palaces, he has to interact and engage with all chiefs and I wonder how, for example, the Ashanti palace is going to receive Dr. Daannaa, he said. He said the time has come for such traditional positions to be modified to suit the modern society. But sociologist Nana Obiri Yeboah has allayed the fears of the Federation. Dr. Obiri said their conditions do not extend to political appointments so I dont think it should be an issue I dont think chiefs will have cause to complain.
