PHOTO: Nigerian Convicted For Fraud

A NIGERIAN lady who was desirous of owning a Ghanaian passport has been convicted for false declaration to acquire passport, by an Accra Circuit Court. Edema Sandra, 28, is a Nigerian fashion designer resident in Lagos. She was arrested on December 24, 2012 at the passport office in Accra during an interview. She had earlier submitted an application for the passport through some agents in Accra but had to attend an interview where her biometric data would be processed for the passport. Unfortunately, her name and accent gave her away as a Nigerian. After a rigorous interrogation, the panel realized that Edema fumbled while trying to answer most questions posed to her. The Documentation and Visa Fraud Section (DVS) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters was notified. The Director of DVS, Supt. Francis Baah, who confirmed the story, said Edema was arraigned on January 4, 2013 after she admitted she is a Nigerian. Though she mentioned some accomplices, she was unable to help police locate them. She was charged with false declaration for the purpose of acquiring a passport, and was found guilty and convicted. Her sentence was however deferred till January 11, 2013, when she was sentenced to a fine of GH�36,000 or in default serve a six-month jail term.
