The Central Regional Minister, Enoch Kweku Teye Addo, has said he is troubled by the deepening levels of poverty in the region despite the vast natural resources there.
According to him, seeing 'poverty boldly written on the faces of over 50 per cent of the population in the region who live below the poverty line� makes him sad.
He is therefore throwing a challenge to residents in the region to help him to reduce the alarming poverty levels.
According to Joyonline, the minister said, �The World Bank describes these people as people who are living beneath any rational definition of human decency�� and asked, �How can you live a decent life with 90 Ghana Cedis per annum?�
The minister was addressing the heads of departments at the Regional Administration.
Mr Teye Addo was worried that the region which boasts of two universities - University of Cape Coast and the University of Education, Winneba - as well as the best senior high schools in the country, had half of its population living below the poverty line.
�We have the best of schools in the country; what is needed is for us to ask ourselves if our children are attending our schools�Are they attending our schools with the seriousness and the supervision it requires?� he asked.
The minister, who said his vision for poverty reduction was in line with that of President John Mahama, pledged to draw a strategic programme with rich human resources to turn the situation around.
