PHOTO: Armed Robbers 'Pepper' Escorts In Escape Bid

A remand prisoner was allegedly shot dead by the police on Tuesday after he and two other remand prisoners attempted to escape after pouring powdered pepper into the eyes of their police escorts. Mubarak Mohammed, 22; Kwadzo Ibrahim Brenya, aka Lumba, and Osuman Adam, 18, were being conveyed from the Jomoro area to the Sekondi Prison to be remanded when they sprayed the powdered pepper into the eyes of the driver and the four armed police escorts. The policemen allegedly shot and killed Mohammed (pictured in the middle), while Brenya and Adam were re-arrested. The Western Regional Police Command has, meanwhile, directed investigations into how the accused persons came by the powdered pepper. According to the Jomoro District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr John Ferguson Dzineku, the three accused persons were arrested in 2012 for their alleged involvement in a number of robbery cases in the Jomoro area. He said they were put before court in Jomoro and they were being sent back to Sekondi after the court had remanded them into prison custody. My men were then escorting them back to the prison in Sekondi but, on reaching Apowa, near the Commodity Village, about 4 p.m., the accused persons poured the powdered pepper into the eyes of the officers and the driver, he said. He said the driver of the vehicle nearly ran into an oncoming vehicle but he mustered courage and managed to drive to safety. The three accused persons who, he said, were then in handcuffs, jumped out of the vehicle and headed for a nearby bush. Mr Dzineku said the policemen managed to arrest Brenya and Adam, while Mohammed was shot. The two suspects are currently in police custody.
