Ghanaians were yesterday reminded of the need for patriotism, nationalism and sense of responsibility in the development process of the country. These and many more admonitions were contained in President John Mahama's address at the 56th Independence parade in Accra. GBC's Radio Ghana sampled the views of some Presidential Candidates in the 2012 elections on President Mahama's speech. The PNC Presidential Candidate, Hassan Ayariga, said President Mahama was spot on when he called for collective responsibility. He asked the President to tap the talents of all those who have the expertise to advance the cause of progress of the country. The leader of United Renaissance Party, Kofi Wayo, believes President Mahama has the passion for the nation. What is important now is for Ghanaians to support him to achieve the "Better Ghana Agenda." The Presidential Candidate of the United Front Party, in the December 2012 election, Akwasi Addai, popularly known as Odike has commended the security services and school children for a magnificent display at this year's independence anniversary. Commenting on the speech of the President, Mr. Addai said it was most inspiring and full of hope. He told Radio Ghana that he would have wished the main opposition New Patriotic Party, NPP, were heavily represented at the event. Mr. Addai also said it will be premature on the part of any individual or group to begin assessing the performance of the President now. He pledged his commitment to support the President to make Ghana a better place for all citizens. The General Secretary of the CPP, Ivor Greenstreet, has expressed confidence in President John Mahama to deliver on his Better Ghana Agenda. Speaking to Radio Ghana on the President's address to mark the 56th anniversary of Ghana's independence, Mr. Greenstreet said the President could not have said anything better. He said it is about time every Ghanaian supported the President and the government to make life comfortable for all citizens. The chairman of the National Democratic Party, NDP, Dr. Josiah Ayeh says President Mahama's call on Ghanaians to practice morality, Patriotism and selflessness is not enough. He told Radio Ghana that 56 years down the line, the nation's leader must walk the talk. A member of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Communications Team, Samuel George described President Mahama's speech as a play back of 6th March, l957. He told Radio Ghana that it is high time the people re-identify what it means to be a Ghanaian. He said patriotism calls for selflessness and civic responsibility by protecting national assets and saying no to all fraudulent activities.
