VRA Demands For Increment In Tariffs Has No Basis - NPPs Abayifa Karbo

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Abayifa Karbo, has bombarded the Volta River Authority (VRA) for demanding an increment of electricity tariffs. According to him, VRA has no basis to demand for an increment.VRA has called for an immediate upward adjustment in electricity tariffs to improve the companys finances. It said to ensure sustainability of its operations, it is imperative for the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to stick to regular tariff adjustments to reflect cost of generation. Karbo said instead of increasing, the authority should rather insist that Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as well as the Government of Ghana pays its debts that have been accumulated over the years. He alluded to the fact that it is insensitive for the authority to demand for increment of tariffs; looking at the current difficulties Ghanaians are facing in the country especially with the increment of fuel prices. Speaking to Randy Abbey on Metro TVs Good Morning Ghana, Anthony Karbo said if VRA will ensure that there is efficiency, Ghanaians will not grumble when there is an increment; they will pay it wholeheartedly. The people are asking for efficiency. Once there is efficiency and Ghanaians are happy, they will not even complain when tariffs are increased. VRA has no basis to demand for tariff increment I dont think it is proper for VRA to be calling for this especially looking at the economy and what Ghanaians are going through... Why wont ECG pay up its debt and make VRA viable government should also take care of its debts. If these debts are paid and Ghanaians heed to the Presidents call of being responsible in our utility use, we will get somewhere he posited.
