Kumasi Shooting Spree Incident: Military Must Be Invited To Assist Police

The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress(NDC),Joseph Yamin says the military should be called upon to join the police service in handling the armed robbery situation in Kumasi and bring some calmness in the region. According to him, he is not undermining the work of the police however; we are in an era where the society is not afraid of the police because of their actions and inactions. "I think that we are under-utilizing our military and it is one of the causes of indiscipline in the country. If we have such a situation, why dont we call the military into the city to make sure that people like these are eradicated? If the military are in the barracks, knowing very well that they can do well than the police are doing, why should we keep them there?" he said. Yamin was reacting to the indiscriminate shooting incident by robbers in Ayigya in the Ashanti Region following the police arrest of 150 suspected robbers in a swoop intended to reduce the flood of armed robbery in the region. Speaking to Kwami Sefa-Kayi in an interview on Peace FMs Morning Show programmeKokrokoo, Yamin added: "We are not getting the true picture of what is happening in Kumasi. It is like armed robbers have taken over Kumasi but that is not the issue. However, if the people arrested are all armed robbers, then we have a big problem," he mentioned. "The most important thing is to bring calm in Kumasi, send a constant patrol team to the affordable housing unit; the hideout of the armed robbers. Apart from that, I think that we should involve the military. If they need reinforcement, they should use the military," Yamin intimated.
