A DRIVER WHO went into hiding for some days after hitting and killing a 72-year-old farmer, Kwame Mensah, with his Mercedes Benz tipper truck, registered AS 8528-C has finally been nabbed by the police. Adjei Okyere, the driver, reportedly threw the lifeless body into a bush, two kilometres away from the scene of the incident. He finally resurfaced and was grabbed by the police only after the incident which occurred at Bonwire in the Ashanti Region, had been announced by a radio station in Kumasi. Narrating the story to DAILY GUIDE, Richard Karikari of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) said the farmer was returning from farm in late March this year when he was hit and killed by Okyere�s truck. After the accident, the truck�s driver picked the lifeless body of the farmer into the truck, drove to a spot two kilometres away from the accident scene and threw it into the bush. Okyere then drove the truck to its owner�s house at Kotei Deduako near KNUST where he parked it. He did not inform the owner of the accident and went into hiding at Elubo. The farmer did not return to the house on the day of the incident so his relatives started searching for him but to no avail. Later they had a tipoff that a truck with registration number AS 8528-C, had knocked and killed a man some days ago. The deceased�s family members mounted a search for their relative and they finally discovered his body in a bush. Armed with information about the car which killed their relative, the family members then reported the matter to Richard Karikari who coincidentally is the host of �Akwantufuo Kyefa,� a programme about road and traffic on Otec FM. Karikari then announced the incident on his network, prompting the public to search for the truck and the driver who killed the farmer and fled. Okyere reportedly heard about the incident on radio so he quickly called the owner to confess his actions. The truck owner ordered him to come to Kumasi so the matter could be reported to the police. Karikari said the truck driver heeded to his owner�s advice and returned to Kumasi where the matter was reported to the police. The police detained Okyere and processed him before court. The NRSC staff said Okyere has since been remanded by a court at Ejisu.
