And strangely, just two weeks later, Kantamanto had been burn to the ground by a strange conflagration! Facelift for Ga Mashie By Lawrence Markwei Ga Mashie, the heart of the Ga State which is over-populated with scattered dilapidated buildings, is to be given a facelift. Also to benefit from the face-life are Agbogbloshie, Salaga, Makola and Kantamanto markets, all located on the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra. Nii Lante Vanderpuije, Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo Constituency which covers the areas aforementioned announced this when he met with his constituents on Tuesday. The meeting was the first in series to be to be held in all the electoral areas in the constituency to discuss development agenda and critical issues which were discussed in Parliament before its break. The member of Parliament stated that an international estate developer has expressed interest in developing the area with support of the people. He said that, the success of the plan was much dependent on the cooperation of the families who owned the buildings in the area. Mr. Vanderpuije said if the families would accept the project, those living in the houses would be temporarily relocated for multi-purpose high-rise buildings to replace any dilapidated structure. He said an agreement would be made in a form of Build-Operate and Transfer scheme where the families would be offered some of the apartments upon completion until the investor recouped his investment and transferred the properties to the families. Mr. Vanderpuije cautioned the residents to avoid misconstruing the noble idea as an avenue to clandestinely snatch their birth right from them. He said the scheme should rather offer every family the opportunity to change their living and economic standards to meet the trend of a fast developing city of Accra. Mr. Vanderpuije said plans are also far advanced to transform the major markets into high-rise shopping malls in order to accommodate the traders in Accra and at the same time beautify the city. He said we cannot continue to live in the past when the future is beckoning us with better prospects for generation yet unborn. He briefed them about the Presidential Sessional Address, the Budget Statements and Committees he has been appointed to help with Parliamentary work.
