The Western Regional Police command has given a two-week ultimate to motorists in the metropolis to get vehicles and documents in shape or face the law. Speaking to journalists in Takoradi, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye said it was sad that the metropolis had been bedeviled by a high level of lawlessness. He said many people were driving without licenses or used expired ones, fake number plates, DV number plates at unapproved times all of which posed a lot of problems on the streets. DCOP Boakye said the police would not fold its arms and watch while the people take the law into their own hands. �I can assure you that after extensive look at the system, we have noticed a lot of anomalies and we will go after them. We will not look at anybody�s face for mercy, the law would take its course,� he said. He said there were laws governing the use of number plates and that vehicles should be registered under approved conditions. The Regional Police Commander said the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit would get tough on motorists to ensure that the indiscipline was reduced. He regretted instances where vehicles loaded from unapproved locations as though there were no laws, saying, �We have observed and we will not allow that. We will clean the system.� He said the traffic situation in the metropolis could be better if people respected the law. Aside the motoring public, he said he had met with various restaurant operators and other service providers and discussed their modes of operations which mostly attract crowds that required the presence of the police. He said owners of popular public places such as Vienna City had been advised to request for police presence to help manage crowds, adding that given the high level of nightlife at various entertainment joints the police had no choice but to deploy men to ensure security of the citizenry. �As you can see there is police presence at every street of the city and other intelligence men also on the ground in the communities, all in the bid to be one step ahead of the criminals,� he said. DCOP Boakye said with the blessing of the Inspector General of Police, the Western Regional Command had established a patrol unit dedicated to the protection of the citizenry. He also used the opportunity to advise the general public to be law abiding and also volunteer information that would lead to exposing criminals in the communities and make life bearable for law abiding members of the communities. Some members of the general public who spoke to the Daily Graphic welcomed the move by the police and praised the capabilities of the new commander, saying they were not surprised by the initiatives.
