Mr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, on Wednesday said government was committed to paying fair wages and salaries to workers under the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS). He said no government would like workers agitation over their salaries and entitlements. Mr Mohammed made the observation when the National Executives of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress paid a courtesy call on him and his Co-Deputy, Mr Felix Ofosu-Kwakye in Accra. Mr Mohammed called on all labour unions to collaborate with government to help address workers welfare issues and to use peaceful means in resolving their grievances, and urged them to be reasonable in their demands for better condition of service, since the treasury might not be in a position to meet some of them. Mr Mohammed said the government was not against the media fraternity; hence, it has created the Media Fund to help better the lots of both the private and public sector media,and assured staff of all private media houses under the CWU that government would help resolve any industrial dispute that might arise between them and management if the need be. Mr Ofosu-Kwakye said government had committed enormous revenue into the implementation of the SSSS and therefore, was expecting workers to deliver in order to commensurate it. Mr Victor Coleman, National Chairman of CWU, said they were expecting industrial harmony between them and the Ministry and assured the two Deputy Ministers that the Union was a responsible one, which sought to promote the well-being of its members. Antwi, National Vice Chairman, Mr Henry Dela Ayivor, General Secretary, Mr Henry Oduro, Ghana News Agency Local Chairman, Mr Nicholas Atta-Addo, TV Africa Local Vice Chairman, among others.
