Election Petition: Running Adverts Will Diminish The Value Of The Case GBC Boss

The Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Major (Rtd) Albert Don Chebe, has said that showing commercials during the live coverage of the election petition as suggested by some critics would diminish the value of the case. Last week Major Don Chebe revealed that the corporation loses about GHC100, 000 daily because it is unable to run commercials or regular programs during the live coverage of the election petition. His revelation was harshly criticized by a number of Ghanaians who said the failure of the corporation to run commercials during the live telecast of the on-going election petition shows a lack of innovation on the part of management. But speaking to Citi News, Major (Rtd) Albert Don Chebe, he discarded the suggestions and maintained that they are not plausible. Can you imagine that you are watching this momentous, profound probably the most important judicial case that has come in Ghanas lifetime and in between, you are seeing adverts on all kinds of herbal products, on all kinds of soap. According to him, such adverts will diminish the value of this very, very momentous case. At the same time, you have to remember that this Supreme Court case is being watched abroad in many countries and what kind of picture will we be painting if we have the Supreme Court case interspersed with all kinds of adverts? Meanwhile, government has indicated that it does not have immediate plans to rescue the state broadcaster because the corporation has not officially requested its assistance. A Deputy Information Minister Murtala Mohammed told Citi News, government has not had any formal complaint that this is what they are going throughso I cant make any conclusive statement on this.
