The suspicion of arson relating to recent fire outbreaks especially at major market centres across the country and subsequent announcement by President John Dramani Mahama that fire experts from the United States of America will be engaged to ascertain the real causes of these devastating fire out breaks, will not prejudice the outcome of the investigations, according to a government spokesperson.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye, a Deputy Minister of Information, who made the pronouncement, noted that the fire out breaks have become a source of worry for the government because these fires seem to follow a certain pattern.
��if fire breaks out in one or two markets, one could say it was an accident though it is always regrettable. It can therefore be said that there is no correlation between the two incidents but when it happens that, a consistent pattern emerges that major markets across the country experience fire out breaks in the night, when everyone had left these markets after business...it becomes worrisome,� he said.
Despite the fact that investigations have proven that bad electrical wiring and other factors could have led to some of these fires, the Deputy Information Minister was of the view that �if within a matter of two months if fire out breaks occur in seven major markets, at the same time and under the same circumstances, clearly, one must understand what is happening�.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye, who was speaking on AsempaFM, was contributing to discussions regarding reservations expressed by a cross section of the general public that the utterances of the President and some top government officials, could jeopardize the outcome of the investigations, yet to be conducted with the help of America.
The Makola Number 2 Market was on Tuesday night razed by fire. It is the latest to have gutted markets in the capital. In fact it�s the fifth market fire in less than two months; with the Kantamanto fire still fresh on the minds of people.
Whiles investigations into the incident is still inconclusive, the two major political parties in the country, the ruling National Democratic Congress and the opposition New Patriotic Party have pointed accusing figures at each other as having masterminded the market infernos.
