A Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey has stated that he has been vindicated by the Supreme Court ruling directing Waterville Holdings to refund the 47 million euros judgment debt paid them by the State. Mr. Ghartey, who was Attorney General under the last New Patriotic Party (NPP) government had always insisted that that government had declined payment of the judgement debt because he state had no contract with Waterville Holdings. Speaking to Citi news, he congratulated Martin Amidu for fighting to retrieve the money for the nation. �If you recollect, the police invited me and were asking me questions about that agreement and I told them Waterville did not have an agreement�we politicize everything because there were people who believed Waterville was saying there was something wrong; why did we cancel the agreement but I am saying there was no agreement,� he stated. Mr. Ghartey further mentioned, �I think the Supreme Court has clearly shown that our position and it is good that our public purse is being protected�.whether it was through Martin Amidu or through any other process, I knew that my position was clear. I had never had any agreement with them.� He also reiterated that he had never known Alfred Woyome as a representative of Waterville Holdings and never had any dealings with him. �As for Woyome, I don�t even know him. I have never met him and had no dealing with him. The person that we had dealings with was Waterville and I wrote a letter to them telling them that they did not have a contract with us and the Supreme Court has agreed with me,� he noted. On Friday, 14th June, 2013, the Supreme Court, by a unanimous decision ruled in favour former Attorney General, Martin Amidu in the suit filed against Alfred Agbesi Woyome, Waterville Holdings and Austro Invest. According to the ruling, Waterville Holdings must refund the amount paid to them by the state. The court however ruled that a decision on the GHC 51.2 million paid to Woyome will be made after the case at the High Court is resolved.
