Vanderpuye Does Not Deserve Re-nomination Assembly Members

50 members of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly are protesting against the re-nomination of Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuye as Mayor by the President John Mahama. President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday re-nominated twelve Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions. Some have said the re-nomination suggests the president is happy with the mayors work in city so far. Speaking to Citi News, the spokesperson of the aggrieved assembly members, Francis Fiifi Donkor indicated that, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuye had done little within the metropolis to deserve another term in office. Certain policies from 2010 that he needs to be implemented has not been done by Oko, and when he comes, there are certain hit men he has entrusted they are going to split the assembly into two, he said. But the Mayor disagrees with the aggrieved members. He told Citi News he believed he is on track but needed the support of all the assembly members to complete the enormous challenges confronting the assembly. I have worked in this assembly for four years and since day one, the assembly members have had faith in me and whatever we have achieved in the assembly, we have achieved together, he stated. I know what is happening in the assembly and I know we will overcome it. I and the assembly members will all work together for the continuous development of Accra. I cannot do it by myself. It takes me, the assembly members and staff of the AMA to move Ghana forward, he added. Touching on the flood situation in the capital this year, the Mayor said the situation had not escalated because of the work the assembly has done over the years. Since the flooding we had in 2009 and 2010 where lives were lost, I have learnt a great lesson and that lesson is that we have to prepare the grounds; disilt our drains, educate the people and that is what we have done for the past three years. We will continue to improve the situation on the ground and thank God we have not had any major flood for the past two years, Mr. Vanderpuije stated.
