NDC National Chair Aspirant For Best Farmer Award????

The National Coordinator for National Disaster Management Organization [NADMO], Mr Kofi Portuphy is being tipped to win the Best Regional Farmer for the Eastern Region the second time in three years. Mr Portuphy, who apart from his public work is also a commercial farmer and was selected the Best Plantain Farmer for the Eastern Region in the year 2010, is expected to be awarded the overall regional best farmer for this year. The National Democratic Congress Vice Chairman is also the Chief Executive Officer of Danyame Farms located between Asiakwa and Sadjamasi in the East Akyem District in the Eastern region. Communities around the farm have consistently commended Mr Portuphy for his support towards the socio-economic development of the area. One elderly man said since Mr Portuphy started his farm around 1985, he has assisted many farmers and their children. He has a 70 acre cocoa farm, 20-acre maize farm, 20-acre plantain farm, 45 acre cassava farm, cattles, sheeps and goats all within the farm which has 10 permanent workers. Members from the Regional Select Committee have already inspected his farm and were said to be impressed with the state of affairs within the farm. An associate of Mr Portuphy told this paper they are not surprised about the prospect of him being selected for recognition by the committee because of the modern methods he has adopted in his farming activities. According to him, Mr Portuphy is very conversant with good agricultural practices such as fertilizer application, weed, pest and disease control as well as scientific animal production techniques. He is also said to be very much aware of problems of the environment and the measures needed to be taken to alleviate their harmful effects. Portuphy�s contribution towards the growth of the community in which he farms is also one area the people in the community appreciates.
