Government Asked To Increase Pension Benefits

Daasebre Professor Emeritus Oti Boateng, Omanhene of New Juaben, has appealed to the Government to review upwards the monthly pension benefits of the nations senior citizens. He said Government needed to appreciate the toil of the senior citizens and their sacrifices that has brought the nation this far, by ensuring that they live happily for the rest of their lives. Daasebre Oti Boateng was speaking at this years Senior Citizens Day organized by the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council in Koforidua on Monday. According to the Omanhene, the current pension benefit of senior citizens was too meager considering the high standard of living. He praised the senior citizens for their contribution to national development and asked them to positively influence the youth so that they could become patriotic. Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, Eastern Regional Minister, said there was the need to appreciate the efforts of older people when they are alive. She said the Government was making frantic efforts to review the pension scheme to the advantage of senior citizens. Ms Ntoso urged senior citizens to advice the youth to shun acts that could disturb the peace of the region. She also appealed to the elderly in mining and forest areas to caution the youth against illegal mining and lumbering to protect natural resources in the region. We are soon going to pounce on those people and we will not take it lightly with them when arrested; our next step would be to destroy activities of Fulani herdsmen after we have dealt with the galamsey operators, Ms Ntoso said. More that 200 old men and women from the various municipalities and districts in the region were feted and awarded for their sacrifices and commitment to the development of the region.
