The Editors Forum Ghana (EFG) has petitioned the Supreme Court to reduce Ken Kuranchie�s ten days jail term on humanitarian grounds.
Kuranchie, the Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper, was slapped with the ten days jail term last Tuesday for criminal contempt.
A press statement signed by Ms Ajoa Yeboah-Afari, Chairperson of EFG, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Sunday, said the Forum was convinced that the intended effect and the warning by the Supreme Court to the media had already been achieved.
�As a body which has long campaigned for responsible journalism, we would be the first to agree to the need for the media to always bear in mind circumspection in exercising media freedom and the need for respect for the Panel,� it said.
The statement said the warning to the media of the importance of knowing where to draw the line in writing, had already been achieved and pleaded with the panel of Judges to consider reducing the sentence.
The EFG is a group of editors present and past, senior journalists and media educators and it is affiliated to the Ghana Journalists Association.
It was founded in 2005 with sponsorship from the United Nations Development Programme under its Peace and Governance Programme.
