An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a trader to 50 years imprisonment in hard labour for snatching a taxi driver of his car at gun point in Awoshie, a suburb of Accra. Michael Bawah engaged in the crime with three others, who are currently at large. The convict and his accomplices attacked the taxi driver at gun point, brutally assaulted him and made away with his Nissan March taxi cab, with registration number GW 7512-11. Michael Bawah was convicted to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery before the court, presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri, after he had earlier pleaded not guilty. According to the court, the prosecution, after almost a year of trial has been able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and, therefore, found Michael Bawah guilty of all the charges leveled against him. Narrating the facts of the case in court, the prosecutor, DSP Reidnolf Agyemang, told the court that on March 14, 2012, the complainant was attacked at gun point at Awoshie by Michael Bawah and his accomplices. He said during the attack, the complainant was brutally assaulted and his Nissan March taxi cab was snatched from him, after which he made a report to the police for investigation. According to him, on April 9, 2012, whilst the investigation was ongoing, the police received information that Michael Bawah and his accomplices had again snatched a KIA Cerato vehicle at gun point from the owner. The prosecutor mentioned that Michael Bawah and his gang, after snatching the vehicle fixed a fake number plate (GW4058-11) on it and were on the verge of proceeding to Accra to offer for sale. The police proceeded to cocoa clinic area at Kaneshie, where Michael Bawah was arrested. When he was interrogated, he told the police that he and his accomplices snatched the car at Awoshie and sold it to one Alex at Ashaiman, he stated. DSP Agyemang recounted that on April 18, 2012, Michael Bawah led the police to Ashaiman with the view of tracing the said Alex, but could not be traced. Michael Bawah again led the police to the second and third accused persons houses at Kasoa and Dome respectively, but could not be traced as well. All efforts made to trace the said accomplices proved futile, the prosecutor added.
