Only Three Of Kumasi 209 Suspects Culpable

After rigorously screening the total of 209 suspected criminals, including 18 females, that were rounded up by the police at Asafo and its environs in Kumasi last Tuesday, only three of them, all males, were found to have alleged cases to answer, according to the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Police, ASP Mohammed Yusif Tanko. He identified the suspects as Kwame Nyame, 23, Emmanuel Boateng and Richard Owusu, both 21, and explained in an interview with this paper yesterday that the three were identified as having been involved in serious robberies that rocked Kumasi recently. He said they had been sent to court to be remanded while further investigations were still ongoing in their respective cases. Meanwhile, he said all the others have been released on police enquiry bail. In a five-hour operation last Tuesday evening at Asafo and its environs in Kumasi, the Police rounded the 209 suspected criminals who were displayed in the open at the Regional Police headquarters for purposes of media coverage. The police also succeeded in seizing a KIA Rio taxi with registration number GR 3459-11, which suspected robbers had allegedly been using for their operations for about a month now, in addition to a number of machetes and other dangerous weapons, as well as a haul of suspected cannabis that were found in their hideouts. According to him, the police had received many reports of attacks on innocent residents who used the Asafo Interchange and areas around the A-Life Provision Shop, Adum. The police therefore stormed the identified criminal joints between 7pm and midnight of last Monday and succeeded in rounding up the 209 supposed criminals.
