Road crashes reduced in the first half of the year, Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah, Executive Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) said on Thursday.
She said the country recorded a total of 6,839 reported cases between January and June as against 7,172 in 2012, representing a reduction of 4.6 per cent.
Mrs Obiri-Yeboah made this known at a mid-year review meeting of the NRSC in Kumasi on the theme: �Scaling up towards the attainment of 2011-2013 Action Plans Objectives, No Excuses!�
She said the Commission also succeeded in reducing the number of road crash related deaths from 1,144 in 2012 to 1,032 in 2013.
Persons injured in road crashes also reduced from 6,965 in 2012 to 6,463 in 2013.
Mrs Obiri-Yeboah commended staff of the Commission and stakeholders for the feat and called for more support and a �new passion� to meet the expectations of the public.
Mrs Joyce A.B. Mogtari, Deputy Minister of Transport, commended the Commission for being �proactive and open� over the years.
She however urged the Commission to work hard to avoid repeated cases of accidents in the country.
�You must operationalise provisions in the Road Traffic Regulations to further reduce road crashes to meet your targets. You must challenge the status quo and present a better situation in the next six months,� Mrs Obiri-Yeboah said.
Mrs Obiri-Yeboah stated the resolve of the Commission to ban used tyres in the country by September.
Mr Eric Opoku, Ashanti Regional Minister, in a speech read on his behalf, said though the Region recorded reduction in road crashes within the period under review, the Commission needs to do more education on the menace.
The participants discussed regional reports, the Road Traffic Regulation and tyre safety.
