One hundred and forty-three people died in 232 road crashes recorded in Brong-Ahafo Region from January to June 2013, statistics from the Regional Office of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has revealed.
Mr Agyabeng Mensah-Aborampa, Regional Manager of the Commission who gave the statistics on Thursday, said 477 people were injured in the road crashes, which involved 456 vehicles.
He made this known when he contributed to the on-going 2013 review performance conference of the NRSC on the theme: �Scaling up towards the attainment of the 2011-2013 action plans objectives, no excuse.�
Mr Mensah-Aborampa expressed regret that though the regional office of the Commission had intensified road safety education, road crashes are increasing.
He said from January to June 2012; the region recorded 323 road crashes killing 103 people with 472 people sustaining injuries.
Mr Mensah-Aborampa explained that the Commission is collaborating with Ghana Red Cross Society and Ghana National Fire Service to provide first aid training for commercial drivers and volunteers in the community along the N10 corridor to enable them attend to victims during crashes.
�Driver/passenger education on good road use practices at lorry stations is ongoing�, he said.
He said fatigue driving, excessive speeding and poor pedestrian behaviour are some of the major contributory factors to road crashes in the region.
Mr Mensah-Aborampa called for effective collaboration among stakeholders in road safety education campaign.
He asked the electronic media to support the education to bring road crashes cases to the barest minimum.
