Govt Inaugurates Ctee On Model Markets

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) has set up a five-member technical committee for the construction of model markets across the country. This development comes in the wake of the recent spate of fire outbreaks that has hit some major markets nationwide. The deputy minister of MOTI, Mr. Nii Lante Vanderpuije who represented the sector minister spoke of how markets have become places of anguish and pain instead of places of joy and hard-work. He explained how the central committee, as it is known, was going to phase out old markets and put in their place new model markets for all regional and district capitals and major towns throughout the country. It is the desire of the president Mahama administration and the minister for trade and industry to give it the impetus it deserves in other to move it from the first, to the second and then to the third gear he said. He also urged the media to support the government and the ministry until the completion of the project. The deputy minister asked the media not to give attention and recognition to traders who will try to prevent government from rebuilding these markets. We are beginning to allow people to show indiscipline and disobey regulations, he said. He also alleged that, I know if we leave this place now and say we are ready to rebuild Kantamanto, I know people will gather and misbehave. But it is my expectation that as media men and journalists we will be able to tell the people that for us to be able to have a place where these disasters will stop once and for all it is their responsibility to allow this to be done. Meanwhile, the five members of the central committee are Mr Ekow Coleman of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning; Mr Patrick Affum Asumadu of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development; Mr Augustine Otoo of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC); Mr Kojo Ntim Atuahene the acting director of the Ministry of Trade and Industry; and Nana Akrasi Sarpong the communications director of the aforementioned ministry.
