The Police has sent a word of caution to community members across the country against taking the law into their own hands by meting out instant justice on suspected robbers.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Odame, Akwatia District Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday in an interview after a brutal assault on a suspected armed robber at Ekoso in the Eastern Region.
The suspect, Kwabena Owusu, was alleged to have unlawfully entered the Ekoso branch of the Church of Christ International and stolen a loud speaker and microphone.
He was found last Tuesday near the church building in a critical condition after the severe assault.
Owusu, who hails from Anyinam, was rushed to the Asamankese Government Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
DSP Odame invited the elders of the town to the Osenase Police Station where he entreated them to advise the youth against any future instant justice.
The commander said instead of killing suspected robbers, they should rather arrest them to enable the police to know their mode of operation and to apprehend their accomplices.
�Instant justice is unlawful and must be shunned; after all a person is presumed innocent until pronounced guilty by the court,� he added.
Ekoso is under the political administration of the West Akyem Municipal Assembly but is part of the Akwatia District Police.
