The Deputy Minister in charge of Tertiary institutions, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has attributed the poor performance of some of the nation�s tertiary institutions to what he refers to as the ineffective monitoring systems in the country. Speaking to citifmonline.com, Mr Ablakwa noted that contrary to widely held opinion, the shortage of lecturers was not the main problem that needed to be tackled. According to him, if the county should make a conscious effort to improve its monitoring systems, service delivered by lecturers in the tertiary institutions will be improved. He pointed out that the widely held perception that the synergy between the various areas in the educational sector was wavering, were false. According to him there were respective agencies that were supposed to specialise in a specific area. �The Ghana Education Service�s mandate is to look at basic education and the National Council for Tertiary Education which looks at higher education,� he clarified. He appealed to Ghanaians not to blow the current challenge the tertiary institutions were facing in terms of admissions and accommodation out of proportion. According to him, tertiary institutions did not encompass only universities but also included polytechnics, vocational institutions and professional institutions. He appealed to parents and students to consider the wide array of higher educational options available to their wards and not only universities.
