Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Standards Board (GSB), Mr Amponsah Bediako, has bemoaned the habit of Ghanaians importing items which can be produced in the country. He said it is saddening that at this time and age and upon the many levels of education, items like socks, soap and �even chewing sticks� are imported. Mr. Bediako was speaking on the accusation that GSB has contributed in congestion at the Ports. Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, Mr Bediako said if most of the things which are imported will be produced in the country, it will aid in reducing the congestion at the Ports. �It will be very helpful if most of the things being imported are produced in the country. Most of the things being imported can be produced in Ghana. Now there is the import of soap, socks, everything and so it has also contributed in the congestion at the port� There is the need to wake up and do things for ourselves otherwise what will be the use of the education we acquired or acquiring. �� he deplored. He added that, in their (GSB) bid to maintain acceptable standards for product and services, they often conduct various tests and investigations and it is those ones that delay the removal of the items from the port. �When the items arrive, they will be taken to the bonded warehouse; instead of staying at the ports where it will be locked and checked before the items will be allowed to go out. We are all worried about the port congestion... We are also upgrading our equipments to aid in fast tracking our investigations and tests for the items to be released on time�� he added.
