THE SAKUMONO Police on Monday night gunned down a suspected armed robber and apprehended another after the robbers had snatched a boutique operator’s handbag at Sakumono near Tema. The robbers were identified as Wisdom Narh, 26 and Evans alias Cargo, both residents of Ashaiman Night Market. They were taken to the Police Hospital in Accra where Evans unfortunately died upon arrival while Wisdom received treatment as a result of an injury sustained in the head when a motorbike they used for the operation was involved in an accident. Evans’ lifeless body had been deposited at the hospital’s morgue pending autopsy, while Wisdom is under police surveillance receiving treatment before investigation and subsequent prosecution. The police retrieved a locally manufactured pistol used by the robbers, an ammunition, a Royal motorbike with registration number M-13-GT 922 and the lady’s handbag containing GH˘380. Superintendent Alex K. Wowolo, the district commander, told DAILY GUIDE that at about 9:00pm on Monday night, when the boutique vendor was in the process of closing from duty and locking the shop, a young man attacked her and snatched her handbag containing money and mobile phone. He said the robber came in with another colleague who waited on a motorbike while he undertook the criminal operation. After the robbery, he jumped on the parked motorbike and quickly sped off. The lady raised the alarm which attracted neighbours and some police personnel, who were then travelling in a vehicle, chanced on the incident and immediately gave the robbers a hot chase. According to him, the robbers rode speedily to a distance of about 300 metres before the police officers gave warning shots in a bid to get them to stop. But the robbers would not budge. Sensing that the robbers could elude them, one of the police officers shot the pillion rider which compelled the rider to lose control of the motorbike. The District Superintendent said the pillion rider, who received the bullet wound, took to his heels after the accident. He was arrested with the assistance of some bystanders and neighbours before being taken to the hospital with the assistance of the Police Night Patrol Team. He said the robbers, while being chased by the police, quickly threw the handbag away. The police found out it that the bag contained the said amount of money but not the mobile phone.
