Trade Unionist proposes graduate studies in union issues

Mr Tranchard D. Youri, a former Trade Unionist has proposed the introduction of graduate studies in trades union in the curricula of the nations universities. Mr Youri, who is also a Poverty Reduction and Job Creation Practitioner and the Chief Executive Officer of TDY (Tranchard D. Youri) Rainwater Harvesting Foundation made the proposal in a letter entitled: Industrial Unrest in the country, addressed to the General Secretary of the Ghana Trades Union Congress. The letter, which was copied to Ghana News Agency suggested the need for an under graduate study programme in labour education to include courses such as mobilisation and management of labour unions for industrial action, resolution of industrial disputes and strategy for collective bargaining agreements. He said the main course of the present industrial disputes is the fact that government is operating on a budget deficit. Therefore, the average Ghanaian worker also engages in corrupt practice in order to finance his domestic budget, he said. He said the remedial measure to the challenges facing government and labour is for the country to embark upon an industrial policy, industrial development programme, job and wealth creation programme and strategy for poverty reduction. Mr Youri urged government to be committed to rapid and balanced industrialisation of the country with the view to benefit the common man in the shape of increasing availability of goods at fair prices, larger employment and higher per capital income. He said youth unemployment programme should be a technology transfer programme and should be supervised and implanted by the National Vocational Training Institute.
