Information reaching The Independent newspaper from Cape Coast and its environs indicate that, personal of the Motor Traffic of the Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service have doubled the charges of bribes they extort from drivers who ply roads in the municipality. Sources say the supposed law enforcers now charge GH₵2.00 instead of the previous GH₵1.00. The drivers suspect that the 100% increment was informed by the recent hikes in fuel prices by government. This �unlawful� activity of the MTTU personal in the municipality has made life difficult for drivers who have also resolved to ply other roads to outwit the police. To prevent being reported, sources say some of the MTTU personal have refused to affix their identities badges of their uniform, making it difficult for passengers and drivers to identify them. Similar unlawful acts were being practiced by some MTTU personal in the Brong Ahafo, which led to the Police Service transferring some of them to other postings in the country. It is expected that the Inspector General of Police would keep an keen eye on his men in the Cape Coast area considering the gravity of the situation and its implications on drivers as well as the image of the Police Service.
