Police Stops PPP Demo

The Police Public Relations Officer in Accra, DSP Freeman Tettey says its ban on all demonstrations in the country until the Supreme Court gives its final verdict on the ongoing election petition is still applicable. This follows a planned demonstration set to be organised by the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP). A few months ago, the police administration issued a statement appealing to groups who intend to embark on demonstration to put a hold on it due to the election petition. According to them, they are short of personnel and will not be able to give protection to any group with that intention. PPP planned to embark on a demonstration over alleged corruption in the Mahama-led administration. Speaking in an interview on Peace FMs Kokrokoo, DSP Freeman Tettey said they have not received any letter from PPP, however, if they insist on embarking on their demonstration, we have no option than to go to court (for a restraining order). The Accra Regional Command has not received any letter from PPP. We heard it on radiothis is a surprise to us that another group will emerge with an intention of going on demonstration. It will be very difficult for us to police any demonstration for now so people should understand us. Very soon everything will endwe are only enforcing the law. The Public Order Act says the police must assist and if the police is not in a position to assist, then you have to call it off, he told Kwami Sefa-Kayi. Meanwhile, PPP has suspended its planned demonstration due to the ban imposed on demonstrations by the police service. According to them, even though they have not received any official communication from the police asking them to put a hold on the intended demonstration, they will abide by it based on what they have heard.
