The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has expressed worry about what it described as cumbersome clearance procedures at the Tema Port, and appealed to Government to suspend the operation of the revenue Task Force there in order not to worsen the agitation among traders and importers. It said while GUTA supported the idea of government widening the tax net at the port, it was, however, worried about the mode of operation of the Task Force. A statement signed by Mr Alpha A Shaban, General Secretary of the Association and copied to the Ghana News Agency said: �The Union does not have a problem with the post clearance checks, but it should be done in a manner that gives respect and freedom to the importer.� The statement suggested that if there was the need for a task force, it should be set up by Government within the Revenue Collection Agencies for successful implementation and sustainability. It said the Union viewed the activities of the Task Force as one of the challenges facing the port, and that congestion, lack of adequate containers and delay of ships at anchorage, among other concerns, were key problems. �If these challenges are properly addressed, it will go a long way to give meaning to our quest to become the Gateway to Africa and ensure better trade facilitation�, the Union said. It said the Association was ready to collaborate with Government as partners for national development.
